In the Middle of the Night

Following the death of her little brother, Sammie’s family no longer fits together seamlessly. When her mum and dad decide to have a trial separation, she’s left behind with just her dad and her elderly great-uncle at their flower-bulb company. While out on a bike ride in the middle of the night, Sammie meets Toon. He’s having a hard time at home too, with his elder half-brother, who’s been thrown out of the house. During their search for ways to fix their families, Sammie and Toon form an unexpected friendship with a group of homeless people, and Sammie learns from them that helping doesn’t always help.

In the Middle of the Night is a compelling novel about letting go of others and holding on to yourself.

Press on Ticker:
‘Heijnis knows how to engage her readers with sparkling dialogue, familiar language and skilfully described emotions. You want to go on reading and find it hard to put the book down. A debut writer who is definitely one to watch.’ – Friesch Dagblad

‘As an organ recipient, I know how someone like Elias feels and what a gift such a donation is. Skaterherz tells this story amusingly and without being kitschy.’ – Marius Schaefer, Junge Helden e. V. (DE)
